Cherimoyas (Annona) aka: custard apples, soursops, soursams, are irregular oval shaped fruits with a green outer skin that can be thorny or smooth. Cherimoyas have a white inner flesh with several small seeds in the center.

How to choose: A cherimoya is ripe when it is slightly soft. Look for cherimoyas with few discolorations, and little smell.

Climate and origin: Cherimoyas originated in Central and South America, and have not yet spread to other tropical climates.

Taste: When ripe cherimoyas have a very sweet and very pungent taste with a slimy chewy texture.
