Pineapples (Ananas comosus) are rather large spiky oval shaped fruits with a leathery green-yellow outer skin, and sharp pointy green leaves for a crown.

Pineapples contain bromelain, an enzyme which can break down meats. Thus, pineapples have a reputation as being able to help stomach disorders and aid in digestion. The bromelain in pineapples also makes them an excellent meat tenderizer for marinades. *Some of these health benefits are due to the nutrients highly
concentrated in Pineapples, and may not necessarily be related to Pineapples.
Try to pull out one of the leaves from the top of a pineapple, if it comes out easily you know the pineapple is ripe. Look for a bright yellow color in the skin. Give the pineapple a squeeze and if it gives, you know it is very ripe. Beware of mold at the bottom of the pineapple as this is a signal the pineapple is too ripe and should be carefully cut before eating if eaten at all.
Climate and origin
Pineapples originated in Central America and are now grown all over the tropical world, from East Asia, to Africa, to Hawaii.
Pineapples have a very sweet, almost tart, unique fragrant taste.
Pineapples were first introduced to Europe by Columbus when he discovered the New World. Amazing both in taste and appearance, pineapples quickly became an expensive and exotic delicacy.
